I remember when I was a kid, I would ride my bike around in our neighborhood looking for an open garage. It meant my friends were home, and I could come play.
But we’ve all seen those garages where the door definitely should not be opened. You know, the ones where there’s just a little pathway between the garage door and the house (and maybe even a few well-placed booby-traps on that path).
It makes sense, though. The garage is, to a degree, out of sight and out of mind. It’s the place where you can pile up the things you don’t want to think about right now, or for a long time to come. It’s equal parts storage, landing zone, and graveyard for items that aren’t on your “A-list” anymore. Anyone who’s lived in a home for a long time knows the struggle!
But you don’t have to live with the buildup of stuff you haven’t used in years! Follow these simple steps and your garage will be organized to perfection in no time!
Step 1: Clear our the garage.
Step 2: Sort all items into categories.
Step 3: Go through each category and purge anything broken, duplicate, obsolete (I’m talking to you electronics ;) or donate-able. Ask yourself “Have I used this in the last year?” and “How many of this one item do we need?”
Step 4: Organize the remaining belongings into the space. A great professional organizer “hack” is to build up rather than out. Strong shelving units are an excellent way to get maximum storage. Also, consider using plastic, water-resistant containers, which will keep your items sorted AND protected from moisture (especially important in Charleston!!). And don’t forget to label everything so you know where to find things!
There you have it. If you follow these steps and put the time in, your garage will be so organized you can’t even recognize it. I was with a client just last week who laughed as she said, “Well now I can, you know, finally fit a car into my garage”. It really is a nice feeling :)
But if you don’t have the time or energy to go through this process, we’d love to organize your garage for you! If you’d like to chat about how we can help, please give us a call at 843-284-6866 or send me an email to jen@TheNeatBoutique.com for a Free Project Assessment phone call!
